Circa 1860s. Original carte de visite photograph portrait (seated, facing left). Card dimensions 2 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches, photo dimensions 2 x 3 1/2 inches. Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Victorian era Scottish philosopher, essayist, satirical writer and social commentator. He is especially known for his 3 volume history of the French Revolution, published in 1837. Charles Dickens used this work as a primary source for his novel "A Tale of Two Cities".
