Three pages. 5 1/4 x 8 inches. Horatio Nelson Powers (1826-1890) was an American Episcopal clergyman and poet. He served a number of parishes in New England and the Midwest, including St. John's in Chicago (1868-75) where he was a founding member of the Chicago Literary Club. He published a number of books of poetry and contributed to Harper's and Century magazines. In this letter to a Mr. Ashton, Powers responds to Ashton's request to preach at his church. Powers hesitates because of travel involved, saying his wife is an invalid who needs care and that his daughters are "timid" and also require attention.
