Macdonald (1852-1915) was a British soldier and diplomat who is best-known for his service in China and Japan. This book is a memoir written by French clergyman Jean-Francois Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz (1613-1679). De Gondi was known for his conflicts with Cardinal Mazarin, both of whom were key figures during The Fronde (1648-1653), a series of civil wars in France.
